An 8x8 bathroom (96 × 96 in, 64 sq ft) holds a full bath with room to spare. A 60 in tub and the toilet share one 8 ft wall exactly, 60 + 18 + 18 = 96 in, leaving the side wall for a 36 in vanity. Without a tub, a 60 × 36 in shower and a 48 in vanity fit, and a 60 in double vanity fits beside a 48 × 36 in shower.
Four 8x8 layouts, drawn to scale
The dashed boxes are the code’s clear spaces in front of each fixture, and the brass line marks the toilet’s centerline. Open a plan in the layout planner to move things or change the door.
- Toilet centerline to the side: 18 in
- Clear in front of the toilet: 66 in
- Clear in front of the vanity: 75 in
- Sink centerline to the side: 36 in
Layout A: a tub and a 36 in vanity
The 60 in tub fills one corner of the far wall and the toilet takes the rest of it, 18 in from the tub and 18 in from the wall. The vanity has the side wall to itself, with 75 in of floor in front, and every roomier designer number is met.
- Best for: a family bathroom with a tub, the door opposite.
- Room to grow: the vanity wall takes a 48 in vanity too.
- Clear in front of the shower: 60 in
- Clear in front of the vanity: 36 in
- Sink centerline to the side: 24 in
- Toilet centerline to the side: 30 in
- Clear in front of the toilet: 30 in
Layout B: a big walk-in shower
Without a tub, the far corner takes a 60 × 36 in shower with 60 in of floor in front of it. A 48 in vanity runs down one side wall and the toilet sits on the wall opposite the door. Every roomier designer number is met.
- Best for: a shower-only bathroom with a large shower and a wide vanity.
- Watch for: the door swings in next to the shower; keep its swing clear of the shower door.
- Clear in front of the shower: 60 in
- Toilet centerline to the side: 18 in
- Clear in front of the toilet: 66 in
- Clear in front of the vanity: 75 in
- Sink centerline to the side: 20 in
Layout C: corner shower and storage
A 36 × 36 in shower in the corner frees the rest of the far wall for the toilet, 18 in from the shower, and the side wall for a 36 in vanity and an 18 in linen cabinet. The sink’s center stays 20 in from the cabinet.
- Best for: storage in a bathroom without a hall closet nearby.
- Watch for: 36 in square is the NKBA’s smallest comfortable shower.
- Clear in front of the vanity: 27 in
- Sink centerline to the side: 21 in
- Clear in front of the shower: 30 in
- Toilet centerline to the side: 27 in
- Clear in front of the toilet: 30 in
Layout D: two sinks
A 60 in double vanity takes one side wall, its sinks 30 in apart, the code minimum. A 48 × 36 in shower fills the far corner and the toilet sits on the wall opposite it, 27 in from the side wall.
- Best for: a small master bath or a shared bathroom.
- Watch for: 27 in in front of the vanity, between the code’s 21 and the NKBA’s 30.
What the plans assume. The fixtures are drawn at the planner’s nominal sizes, in a room measured between finished walls, with the door where it’s shown. A plan that passes keeps the code’s spacing for those sizes; it doesn’t show that a particular product fits. Check the spec sheet of each fixture you buy. A tub or a shower base goes in against the studs before the walls are finished, so fit it to the stud-to-stud opening its installation sheet gives, not to the finished width: on Kohler’s drawing of its Villager tub, the finished end wall laps ⅞ in over the tub. How each rule is read: what the planner checks.
The double vanity. The planner’s 60 in double vanity sets its sinks 15 in from each end and 30 in apart. Real ones differ: Kohler’s 60 in Hearthaven has its sinks 35½ in apart and 12-9/16 in from the ends of its top, so set wall to wall they would sit closer to the walls than the code’s 15 in. Check your model’s basin centers against whatever stands beside it, and leave a little open wall at each end if you need to. More in how wide a double vanity needs to be.

From the BathDraft layout planner. A square room has the same floor area as a longer, narrower room of the same square footage, but less wall around it: fewer fixtures line up along one wall and more of the floor sits open in the middle; more on that in square bathroom layouts. One foot longer: 8x9 bathroom layouts.
