Master bathroom dimensions

THE ANSWER

There is no single standard size, and no measured national average. Cedreo, a home-design software maker, gives 60 to 160 sq ft as the planning range for master (primary) bathrooms in newer homes, and 40 to 60 sq ft in older homes. In Houzz’s 2023 study of renovated primary bathrooms, 59% measured 100 sq ft or more afterward. What fits is easier to pin down. At the NKBA’s recommended spacing, a double vanity, a toilet and a 36 in shower take at least about 6 ft 4 in × 7 ft 4½ in (47 sq ft) by our arithmetic, before the door. Add a 60 in tub and it’s about 11 × 7 ft 4½ in (81 sq ft).

How big is the average master bathroom?

We found no single measured average. The figures that exist:

  • Cedreo, a design-software maker: 60 to 160 sq ft in newer homes, 40 to 60 sq ft in older ones, as planning figures rather than measurements. A primary bathroom can be 100 sq ft or larger.
  • Houzz, 2023 U.S. Bathroom Trends Study (nearly 2,000 homeowners): after renovation, 59% of primary bathrooms measured 100 sq ft or more, and 22% of homeowners enlarged the room, most often taking space from a closet (44%), a bedroom (24%) or a hallway (7%).
  • Houzz, 2026 U.S. Bathroom Trends Study (1,619 homeowners), which covers all renovated bathrooms rather than only primary ones: 82% kept their size, 10% made the room somewhat larger and 7% much larger. Afterward, 42% measured under 100 sq ft, 35% 100 to 199 sq ft and 22% 200 sq ft or more.

Square feet don’t give you the shape: 100 sq ft can be 10 × 10 ft or 8 × 12½ ft, and the shape decides which layout fits. The plans below start from the fixtures instead. They show the least floor each set of fixtures takes; full rooms with the door drawn in, from 8 × 10 ft up, are in master bathroom layouts.

NKBA Bathroom Planning Guidelines 4, 5, 6, 9, 20 and 21, which quote the IRC’s minimums. The vanity wall: 15 + 30 + 15 = 60 in by code, 20 + 36 + 20 = 76 in for the NKBA. Our arithmetic.

Two master bathrooms, drawn to scale

36 in sink to sink SHOWER 18 in 7 ft 4½ in 6 ft 4 in 47 SQ FT 12 in
Figure 1. A double vanity, a toilet and a 36 × 36 in shower at NKBA spacing: 6 ft 4 in × 7 ft 4½ in, about 47 sq ft (bar = 12 in).

The vanity wall sets the length: two sinks 36 in apart and 20 in from each wall make 76 in. Across the room, the 36 in shower, 30 in of clear floor in front of it and the 22½ in vanity top make 88½ in. The toilet sits 18 in from the shower, with 36 in clear between its front and the vanity.

Toilets up to 30 in deep, vanity tops 22½ in deep, a 36 × 36 in shower in both columns. Code column: sinks 30 in apart and 15 in from the walls, the toilet 15 in from the shower and the tub, 24 in clear in front of the shower. Our arithmetic.

Planning a master bath

  • Door: the NKBA recommends a clear opening of at least 32 in, which takes a 2 ft 10 in door (Guideline 1).
  • Toilet room: if the toilet gets its own room, plan at least 36 × 66 in inside, with a swing-out or pocket door (Guideline 21).
  • Showers: the NKBA’s 36 × 36 in is a comfortable minimum; see standard shower size for larger bases.
  • Tubs: a standard alcove tub is 60 in long; see standard bathtub size.
  • Vanity height: the NKBA suggests 32 to 43 in to suit the user (Guideline 7); see bathroom vanity height.

Questions people ask

What is the average size of a master bathroom?

There’s no measured national average. Cedreo’s planning range is 60 to 160 sq ft in newer homes and 40 to 60 sq ft in older ones, and in Houzz’s 2023 study, 59% of renovated primary baths were 100 sq ft or more.

What is a good size for a master bathroom?

One that fits what you want in it, with the door. By our arithmetic, a double vanity, a toilet and a 36 in shower take at least about 47 sq ft at the NKBA’s spacing, and about 81 sq ft with a 60 in tub, before the door swings in; our master bathroom layouts start at 8 × 10 ft (80 sq ft) with the door drawn in.

How wide should a double vanity wall be?

60 in at code minimums (two sinks 30 in apart, each 15 in from a wall) and 76 in at the NKBA’s spacing (36 in apart, 20 in from each wall).

Is 100 square feet big for a bathroom?

For a primary bath it’s common: 59% of renovated primary baths in Houzz’s 2023 study were that size or larger. It is two and a half times a standard 5 × 8 ft full bath.
