A bathroom remodel in the U.S. typically costs $6,650 to $17,660, about $12,150 on average, by HomeAdvisor’s June 2026 figures. Houzz’s 2026 study, a survey of what its users spent in 2025, puts the median higher: $18,000 for a major remodel of a bathroom under 100 sq ft and $30,000 for a larger one. The two measure different things, so treat each as a benchmark, not a quote. Size, scope and finish move the price most; labor is usually 40 to 65% of it.
What homeowners spent in 2025
| Bathroom renovation | Median | Top 10% spent at least |

| Major (new shower), under 100 sq ft | $18,000 | $44,000 |
| Major (new shower), 100 sq ft or more | $30,000 | $75,000 |
| Minor (no new shower), under 100 sq ft | $5,000 | $24,000 |
| Minor (no new shower), 100 sq ft or more | $10,000 | $39,000 |
| All bathroom renovations | $15,000 | – |
Houzz Research, 2026 U.S. Houzz Bathroom Trends Study: a survey of 1,619 homeowners on Houzz, in August 2026, about what they spent on bathroom projects in 2025, including the ones they did themselves. A “major” remodel upgraded at least the shower; a “minor” one didn’t. These are medians from a sample of Houzz users, not local prices.
What drives the price
- Scope. Fixr puts a minor update at $2,400 to $10,000, a partial remodel at $6,000 to $25,000 and a full gut at $9,000 to $30,000 or more.
- Moving plumbing. Keeping the toilet, the sink and the tub or shower where they are is the biggest saving; our layout planner shows what fits around the drains you have.
- The tub or shower. HomeAdvisor’s range for a new installed shower is $4,448 to $12,373, against $1,650 to $2,800 for a new tub in This Old House’s figures, before the tile around it.
- Finish. Tile alone runs from $5 to $45 per sq ft installed (HomeAdvisor).
- Labor. 40 to 65% of the total (HomeAdvisor, Fixr). Fixr puts the average saving from doing work yourself at about $6,000.
Ways to spend less
- Keep the layout. New fixtures on the old drains cost a fraction of moving them.
- Keep or refinish the tub. Refinishing runs $337 to $631 (HomeAdvisor), against $1,650 or more to replace it.
- Buy a ready-made vanity. A 30 in vanity with its top runs $100 to $500 ready-made (HomeAdvisor).
- Do the demolition and the painting yourself, and leave plumbing and wiring to licensed trades, with permits where your town asks for them.
How the calculator works
Each line is a published range for that job, from the cost guide named beside it. The finish level takes the bottom, middle or top third of every range. Floor tile scales with the floor area, and drywall and painting with the wall area, taken as the room’s perimeter times 8 ft, less about a third for the door, the fixtures and the tile. Adding a bathroom is priced per square foot of the new room: $200 to $250 in existing space and $400 to $550 as an addition (Fixr, HomeAdvisor). We add 10% for surprises behind the walls (This Old House suggests 20%), except on a new bathroom, whose per-square-foot prices are whole-project averages already.
It’s a starting estimate, not a quote: the thirds, the wall area and the contingency are our own assumptions, and the calculator shows them beside the result. Local labor rates move every line, and so does what a contractor includes.
